A Berkhamsted business owner has tackled a gruelling SAS selection test to raise money for charity.
Zak Brophy, who runs the 4D Martial Arts Club in the town, completed the infamous Fan Dance Race on Saturday, January 7.
The Fan Dance is a notoriously challenging 24km march over Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons. Known as the world’s oldest Special Forces test, the challenge is seen as the ultimate indicator of physical and mental aptitude.
Zak told Berkhamstednews: “I somehow signed up to this when I was out wild swimming one morning with some friends. One of them mentioned this crazy thing called the Fan Dance Race and asked if any of us were up for it. I said yes, not really thinking about it, and then when I saw what it was, I realised I’d best get some serious training in! Luckily, we are blessed in Berkhamsted to live in a beautiful place surrounded by stunning woodlands and hills for me to train on.”
Zak has so far raised nearly £600 for local charity The Pepper Foundation, which raises money to fund the Children’s Hospice at Home nursing team, managed by Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
He said: “The Pepper Foundation does truly fantastic work supporting kids and families who really need it. I am aiming to raise £1,500. Whatever little contribution we can make to their invaluable work will be a bonus.”
