‘EXCEPTIONALLY PROUD’: Radlett pupils’ stories bring smiles to community as display is revealed

Author Louis L’Amour once said: “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”

With this in mind, pupils from St John’s Infant and Nursery School in Radlett used their imaginations to create their very own written works of art.

Pupils aged four to seven from Reception and Key Stage One were ecstatic to see their creativity put on display at Phillies Café in Phillimore Recreation Ground on Thursday, October 23.

Over the following weeks, the children will continue to learn grammatical and structural features, before drafting, editing, and publishing their next pieces which include a diary entry from the trenches during the First World War, a fact file on astronaut Mae Jemison, and more.

Five-year-old Reuben told Radlett News: “It is exciting! I can’t wait for people to read my writing about Beegu [an alien who crashes to Earth].”

The writing project began as an ambitious idea to provide a real audience for the children’s writing. The aim is to inspire the pupils to fall in love with writing and storytelling, and also boost confidence.

Now, their stories are bringing smiles to customers over tea, coffee and cake.

Speaking to Radlett News, English lead James Forrester said: “I’m exceptionally proud of the writing our pupils have produced this term. Being able to showcase their work gives them a real sense of pride, and I’m incredibly grateful to Tash and the team at Phillies for helping us make it happen.”

Each term, the display will be refreshed with new pieces of work by different children, allowing all the opportunity to become published authors.

Head of school Lana Gillam added: “Our budding authors have been working hard. I am thrilled that they have had the opportunity to showcase their fantastic writing for everyone to enjoy. I am very proud of all the children.”
