Evergreen seal impressive cup win

Published on: 12th April 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

On a miserable day at Herts FA Letchworth county ground Evergreen FC won the Herts Sunday Intermediate Cup

The game started cagely with both teams trying to work each other out although there were a chance for both teams first Evergreens tom Verbena got free inside the Apollo box but hit his shot straight at the keeper. Then the Apollo forward ran down the left side and his cross shot was well saved by Joss Dunham in the Evergreen goal.

Midway through the first half Evergreen suffered a blow when influential midfielder Matt Goodchild suffered an ankle injury and would take no further part in the game and while Evergreen were sorting themselves out Apollo had their best 15 minutes of the game but without really troubling the Evergreen keeper.

After recovering from the early substitution and the introduction of Callum Rimmer and Sam Robins Evergreen started to take hold of the game and finished the half really strongly and an incredible save from the Apollo keeper from a left foot wonder strike by Jake Colley kept the scores level 0 – 0 at half time but Evergreen going in the much happier.

The second half started where the first half finished and Evergreen were again into their stride and attacking and this pressure finally told when Aleks Jokiel cut inside from the left wing and rolled a beautiful ball down the side of the centre half for Ben Adams to run onto and dispatch with his left foot 1 – 0.

Almost straight from the kick off Evergreen won the ball back deep in their half and started a quick counter attacked again releasing Aleks Jokiel down the left and again Apollo allowed him to cut in from the left but this time his square pass released Ben Adams on the right who buried it with his right foot to make it 2 – 0.

From here there only look like one winner and it was Evergreen who hit the bar twice in a minute first from an Oliver Cripps 25 yard freekick which came back to Ben Adams who’s cheeky chip over the keeper also hit the bar.

Apollo were now waiting to hear the final whistle that duly came and Evergreen crowned County Champions.

Manager Paul Rimmer said he was immensely proud of what the team had achieved this year and it was a great advert for such a great community club such as Evergreen.
