Armed officers surrounded flats in Harpenden today (Wednesday, March 22) after a man barricaded himself inside.
Police, fire, and ambulance crews were sent to a block of flats near Sauncey Wood school in the early hours of the morning. Parents were contacted and asked to collect their children from the school, whilst the road was cordoned off and the flats were evacuated.
A first-floor flat window was smashed and furniture was strewn in the area outside.
In the afternoon, a man was taken away in handcuffs and put in a police van.
A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council: “A block of flats near to the school has been evacuated and residents affected have been offered use of the school hall to take shelter. The school has taken the decision to close early today.”
Herts Police said: “Police were called at around 6.45am this morning to reports of a disturbance. Officers arrived at the scene to find that a man had barricaded himself inside the property, raising concerns for both his welfare and the safety of the emergency services who were in attendance.”
