Enterprising grandmother’s decade of business success

Published on: 20th October 2017   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

An entrepreneurial grandmother from Shenley is celebrating the 10th birthday of a business she created which has saved the NHS thousands of pounds and enhanced GP skills and knowledge by updating and suggesting new ways of treating medical conditions. Evelyn Diamond set up Essentially Medical in 2005 and since then the company which organises educational meetings for General Practitioners has grown considerably arranging more than 1500 events. The company has expanded from its south west Hertfordshire base to cover large parts of London and Middlesex and next month launches in south east London and Kent. Mrs Diamond started the business when she spotted a gap in the market for a ‘medical match maker.’ She said: “I had worked in a private hospital for years in a marketing role. Many of the NHS Consultants I worked with expressed their concerns that many GPs just didn’t know who they were. “I began Essentially Medical as a way of bringing local GPs and local NHS Consultants together so they could learn more from each other to benefit their respective local patients. “This developed into the Consultants giving up their time to visit GPs and share their expertise at surgeries or other locations at a time which suits the doctors’ busy schedules. “The way it saves the NHS money is that after the educational meetings the GPs are able to make informed decisions on a patient’s health often dealing with problems without having to refer a patient to a hospital which is often a lengthy and expensive process “I’m proud of what our teams have achieved over the years and we look forward to the next ten years. Building the business and saving the NHS money is what drives us on.” Dr Martin Harris, a GP, who practises from a north west London surgery said: “Evelyn and her team regularly provide us with opportunities to meet and learn from local Consultants who all have a wide range of specialities.” Mr Daryll Baker, a Consultant   Surgeon and Head of Vascular Services at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, said: “I’ve been involved with Evelyn’s business since its early days and what they do is to create a fantastic opportunity for myself and other Consultants to update GPs on our different specialities and to help them with any problems they have with patients.”
