EN GARDE: Northwood teenager competes at international fencing tournament

A Northwood teenager was a member of the official Welsh team at a London international fencing tournament, participating in two major events.

At the 2022 Fencing Commonwealth Championships, which this year was held at the UEL Sportsdock in East London from August 11-20, Casey Jones competed in both the team fencing competition and the individual Under 20 men’s epee.

In the individual contest, he finished a respectable 21st, the highest ranking of any of the Welsh entrants, made all the more impressive by the fact he was also the youngest, having only recently turned 15.

In the team event, the boys were incredibly proud to have delivered a shock to the impressive and well-regarded side from India, eliminating them. However, the Wales side bowed out of the competition just before the quarterfinals, losing to England by just a few points.

Though the contest has now come to an end, Casey’s next contest has already been confirmed for him, with him set to represent the wider Great Britain team individually and as part of a team at a contest in Budapest, to take place on October 7.

Casey trains relatively locally at the Leon Paul Training Centre in Hendon, but is also supported by local businesses, such as the Health Hive in nearby Pinner.
