A locally based athletics track is set host some of country’s best young athletes as it prepares to host a world-class event.
Woodside Stadium was opened in 1955 by the late Duke of Edinburgh and has been home of the Watford Harriers ever since.
On June 11, it will host the annual the British Milers Club’s International Grand Prix, a major track and field event which this year has been recognised as part of the World Continental Tour, a prestigious status afforded to only one other occasion in the UK.
The World Continental Tour is organised by international sports governing body World Athletics, and is the second tier of competition, just underneath their Diamond League, making it a series of events that is certain to attract some of the best athletes around.
Speaking about the opportunity, Woodside councillor Glen Saffery said: “I’m delighted that the fantastic work the British Milers do with this event has been recognised at such a high level.
“It’s amazing for Woodside to have such an amazing event take place at our fantastic stadium and I’m sure plenty of local residents will come out and watch all the action from these elite level athletes.”
Fellow Woodside councillor Richard Wenham also praised the organisers, saying: “We’ve been so impressed with the organisation and the enthusiasm the British Milers bring to this event.”
Not content with hosting just one elite competition this year, Woodside Stadium will also be the location of the UK’s under-20 European trials and the under-18 world trials later on this year.
