The Conservatives have defeated the incumbent Lib Dems in a recent Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) by-election for the Abbots Langley & Bedmond ward.
This result means that the Lib Dems, whilst still the largest party on the council, do not have a majority any more.
The by-election, which took place yesterday (Thursday, August 22), was called due to the resignation from the council by Matthew Bedford.
Now, following the counting of results, the new representative for the area will be the Conservative candidate Vicky Edwards, who got 593 votes, beating Lib Dem candidate Alex Turner, who earned 500 votes.
In third place came the Green candidate Jane Powell, who got 233 votes, and in fourth came Labour candidate Pierce Culliton, who got 137 votes.
It is the first time the Abbots Langley & Bedmond ward has been represented by a Conservative since the 1990s.
Posting on X after the election, existing TRDC Conservative councillor Oliver Cooper said: “Congratulations to Vicky Edwards: the first Conservative councillor for Abbots Langley & Bedmond in 30 years. Elected on a 22 per cent swing from the Lib Dems!
“And with that, the LDs have lost their majority on Three Rivers. I am so proud of my Three Rivers Conservatives team!”
Now the Lib Dems have 19 of the 39 seats on the council, with the other 20 being shared between the Tories, Labour, the Greens and independent candidates. They still remain the ruling and largest party.
