A day nursery and pre-school in Maple Cross has been increasing efforts to become more sustainable.
Footsteps nursery on Denham Way has been recycling, reusing and re-purposing materials to not only help the planet, but in an aim to teach children about its importance.
Footsteps already has initiatives in place, such as their allotment growing fruit and vegetables, a reduction in single-use plastics and educational activities for the children with recycled items.
Alongside this, they support the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), an organisation that encourages the use of resources to be used sustainably.
The programme works with governments, businesses and communities to improve resource efficiency.
Their involvement with WRAP has allowed the nursery access to a variety of arts and crafts materials.
These materials allow children to engage in activities that provide the younger generation with personal, social and emotional skills with an introduction to maths and science.
Manager Kathy Reynolds said: “We have to engage a child’s natural curiosity and wonder at the earliest opportunity.
“Our eco-friendly initiatives are doing just that; inspiring staff and children alike and providing endless opportunities for fun and learning.”
The children also have access to the Forest School, a key part of the children’s learning, by using natural resources creatively while learning to care for the world around them.
Parent partnerships are also encouraged to continue the education of being sustainable at home.
