DRIVE ON: Council agrees next step for Golf club redevelopment

Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) has approved plans to progress redevelopment of the former Bushey Golf & Country Club site.

Plans include 250 new homes, 50% of which are set to be affordable, alongside a new community hub, retail and nursery facilities. 60% of the site is due to become public open space.

Councillor Jeremy Newmark, leader of the council, said:

“I’m thrilled that we have delivered this long-awaited important step towards reopening this site that has remained vacant for far too long. This land-swap will see sixty per cent of the land kept green, made public, and kept forever.”

Cllr Chris Shenton, portfolio holder for finance, said:

“I am delighted that Council has committed to delivering this development planned for 8 years. This project safeguards the majority of the site as open space and will deliver a new Community Hub and great new supermarket for the town. The alternative was to sell the whole site for housing, an outcome I’m sure the people of Bushey wouldn’t want.”

However, plans have been met with protests, particularly from Bushey Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG).

The museum is set to be moved from its site on Rudolph Road to a “lifeless, white rectangle”. BMAG started a petition to stop the relocation; an agreement has yet to be met.
