A doctor who has been a partner at a Stanmore surgery for almost 30 years has received an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List for services to the NHS.
During Dr Meena Thakur’s time working at Honeypot Medical Centre in Stanmore, the practice has grown to three times its original size and now serves a population of 17,500 patients.
Dr Thakur also set up the borough’s first COVID-19 vaccination service at The Hive Stadium in December 2020. The service vaccinated more than 60,000 patients in its first few months, and also subsequently received national accolades.
Dr Thakur’s other achievements include facilitating the development of a team of volunteer community champions to protect the most vulnerable. She also championed the care of frail older patients, having led the development of the first virtual wards in Harrow, with specialist multidisciplinary teams caring for patients in their own homes and reducing avoidable hospital admissions.
She has previously worked on projects with Age UK Harrow, including a falls prevention service for the elderly and the Home Not Hospital service.
Dr Thakur said: “I’m deeply humbled and honoured to receive this award. As a GP, it’s been a privilege to have cared for my community of ethnically diverse patients in Harrow East for more than 29 years.
“This award is a reflection of the support and dedication of an amazing team of staff, colleagues and volunteers at Honeypot Medical Centre and Harrow East Primary Care Network (PCN), where together we strive to make a positive difference to the health and lives of our patients and our local community.”
Shelley Taylor, PCN manager for Harrow East PCN, commented: “We are delighted to see Dr Thakur awarded an MBE.
“Alongside her clinical leadership roles, Dr Thakur consistently goes above and beyond to provide exemplary patient care. She often works around the clock in order to meet increasingly complex patient needs with unwavering kindness and compassion.
“Dr Thakur is truly an inspiration to the community and to the NHS, and we are immensely proud and thankful to her for leading on changes to enable us to provide patients and the community with the care they deserve.”
