DO YOU REMEMBER: Wombling free on Pinner High Street

Published on: 5th June 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

This month’s historical photo was taken by long-time Hatch End resident Mike Barnard and shows a special event taking place in Pinner High Street in 1973.

Ask any child of the 1970s and chances are they’ll have fond memories of The Wombles, the beloved children’s book characters who became national stars due to their BBC TV series that ran from 1973-75.

The Wombles of Wimbledon Common proved to be extremely popular characters, especially as walkaround characters making visits across the country.

In the photo, dozy but resourceful Womble Orinoco can be seen at the centre, with throngs of people all crowding around to get a picture.

It also shows the shops which lined the High Street at the time, including Sketchley, Williams Brothers and Budgen.
