This month’s historical photo, taken back in 1928, shows the pond on Watford High Street.
The pond was used in the Victorian era for watering horses and livestock, and was also often used as a skating rink when it froze over in the winter. As it ran across Watford’s single main road, the pond would have been used by many people passing through on their way to Rickmansworth, St Albans, or further afield.
In the 1920s, Watford was the foremost shopping destination in the county, and the High Street was packed with high-class shops, two cattle markets, and two department stores.
