DO YOU REMEMBER: A letter from someone who was there when the Queen visited Northwood

Published on: 24th May 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

A photo we published in March’s edition of Northwood&RuislipNews and on the web recently of a royal visit resulted in a lovely message from a local woman who remembers it all.

Evelyn Joyce Hayes, aged 90, remembers attending the Queen’s visit to Northwood Headquarters in 1982, following the end of the Falklands War, and wrote to us to describe her experience as the monarch came to greet the public.

“Regarding the Do You Remember page in the March edition of the Northwood news, yes, I do remember as I was there at this event, and we appear in the photograph that was published.

When it was known that the Queen was making a visit to the then HMS Warrior a group of parents involved with the base and had children attending the local Junior school [Eastbury Farm JMI] arranged for staff and some pupils to attend the royal visit on the 25th of June 1982.

The flag waving and cheering as the Queen approached proved that despite the continuous rain this day was very enjoyable and one to always be remembered.”

We would like to thank Evelyn for her letter and memories of the event.
