Chorleywood Parish Council considering strategies to remove invasive fern from pond
Chorleywood Parish Council (CPC) have stated they are considering ways to remove azolla, a species of invasive weed, from Christchurch pond.
First discovered just before the beginning of the recent winter season, it was hoped the cold weather would freeze the plant out. Sadly, the weather was too mild, and it continues to infect the water.
Methods such as mechanical clearance, chemical eradication and biological control have all been considered.
However, a spokesperson for the council said: “All these management strategies have drawbacks and none of them can be undertaken currently due to it being breeding season. The Council will be seeking further opinions from third party experts before deciding on what action best suits Chorleywood Common.”
For now, while azolla is not toxic to dogs or humans, CPC have asked that pets are kept on leads and out of the ponds to prevent cross-contamination.
