‘DISAPPOINTING’: Sewage discharge in Gerrards Cross leads to cancellation of river dipping event

Published on: 8th August 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

A river dipping event had to be cancelled following a sewage discharge from the Gerrards Cross sewage treatment works.

Recently, the Colne Valley Regional Park hosted its Festival Fortnight event, a series of activities celebrating the park and the wildlife in the area.

Among the events was river dipping in the River Misbourne on Thursday, July 27, but this was cancelled for a rather unpleasant reason.

Posting on the park’s social media, a spokesperson said: “One of our festival events that sold out was river dipping in the Misbourne.

“Recent rainfall has led to sewage discharges from the Gerrards Cross sewage treatment works, so we have had to change this to bug hunting instead. This is really disappointing.”

There has been an ongoing scandal about the amount of sewage being discharged into the water by the plant’s operators, Thames Water.

According to Thames Water’s live map of sewage discharges, the last discharge at the Gerrards Cross plant took place between 12.45am and 4.30am on Thursday, July 27, lasting for three hours and 45 minutes.

Thames Water have been contacted for comment.
