‘DELIBERATELY SABOTAGED’: Bushey councillor storms out of meeting over concerns about SEND

A Bushey councillor says the local Conservatives have shown “fake anger” after he stormed out of a Hertfordshire County Council meeting.

Liberal Democrat county councillor for Bushey North Laurence Brass left a meeting on Tuesday, October 15, as he felt Conservative councillors “deliberately sabotaged” a motion aimed at making the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) process fairer for families.

Cllr Brass feels others made a series of identical speeches about Winter Fuel Payments so that there was no time left to consider SEND reforms.

He was then filmed as he stormed out of the meeting and was heard shouting “we’ve heard this speech so many times, it’s boring” as he left the chamber.

Cllr Brass told Busheynews: “The council meeting was the chance to help hundreds of families across Hertfordshire with concerns about their children’s education. Instead, the meeting was deliberately sabotaged by Conservatives who were desperate to avoid scrutiny of their diabolical record on SEND. As ever, they put politics ahead of the needs of children.”

A Hertsmere Conservative spokesperson said: “Hertfordshire has 189,000 pensioners and many cannot afford to lose the allowance. Cllr Brass being ‘bored’ by the discussions says a great deal sadly.”
