CURRY OSCARS: Popular Abbots Langley restaurant wins top award at prestigious award ceremony

Abbots Tandoori has won the Hertfordshire Chef of the Year award at this year’s Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA), also known as the Curry Oscars.

Owner Emon Chowdhury wanted to apply for the award to show everyone that their head chef Abdul Kalam, who has worked at Abbots Tandoori for 26 years, is one of the best in the business.

Their win followed visits from three mystery customers on a weekday, weekend and during an event day.

After passing this first test with flying colours, Abbots Tandoori went to the final and competed in a cook-off at Cambridge College against 18 other restaurants. They had an hour to cook a starter, main, and a side with naan bread or rice.

It was following this that they were declared the victors for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Emon Chowdhury, owner of Abbots Tandoori, told ABBOTSnews: “We were delighted to win the trophy; we thought we’d win an award or a certificate.

“We’ve worked hard for it; it shows our efforts across the year.”

It has been a fantastic month for Abbots Tandoori, as they also won the 2024 Good Food Award and the Travellers’ Choice Award to put them in the top 10 per cent of restaurants worldwide.

They are also the top-rated restaurant in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire on Tripadvisor.

Abbots Tandoori are aiming for more too, as they have applied to win the National Champion of Champions Award at next year’s ARTA ceremony.
