DELAYS: Emergency services respond to coach fire on M1 near Hemel Hempstead

Lane closures were put in place on the M1 near Hemel Hempstead this afternoon to allow emergency services to respond to a coach fire.

Emergency services were called at around 1.14pm this afternoon (April 14) after reports of a coach fire on the M1 northbound between Junctions 8 and 9.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said: “Police were called just before 1.20pm today, to report a coach on fire on the hard shoulder of the M1 northbound near Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead).

“Officers and the fire and rescue service attended the scene. Lane closures were put in place due to reports of oil in the road. No injuries were reported and the coach was recovered.”

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 1:14pm this afternoon to reports of a coach on fire on the M1 Northbound between Junctions 8 and 9. Five fire engines, from Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Garston and Markyate were sent to the scene, where crews found a coach with no passengers on fire on the hard shoulder. Firefighters extinguished the fire by 2pm.”

Highways England confirmed that all lanes had reopened at around 3.30pm.
