Deal signed for Sainsbury’s supermarket and homes in Northwood

Contentious plans to build a Sainsbury’s supermarket and new homes on Station Approach and Green Lane, Northwood, are set to go ahead as developers have completed a deal to purchase TfL land. My Northwood & Moor Park News first revealed in January that TfL were looking to sell the land on both roads, currently occupied by 17 businesses and a number of homes. Yesterday (June 20) TfL completed a deal to sell the site to Bride Hall developments- who indicate they will ‘create new homes and a small supermarket of approximately 25,800 sq ft which will be occupied by Sainsbury’s’. Draft plans indicated that the plans were for a 47,000 sq ft supermarket, 167 housing units and three car parks. Business owners have expressed their dismay at the plans since the turn of the year, as they have not yet been offered compensation or alternative premises. Campaign group Save Our Northwood are currently circling a petition against the plans, ahead of their first public meeting on July 1. Nigel Desmond, Managing Director Bride Hall said: “We are excited to have committed to this important land deal with TfL which will enable the redevelopment of this key town centre site. Working with our supermarket partner, Sainsbury’s, we are developing proposals to build a small supermarket and residential homes on the land adjacent to the tube station. “We will be carrying out a thorough public consultation with the local community before a planning application is submitted to the local authority,” he added.] Lisa Poyser, Sainsbury’s Development Surveyor said: “We are delighted to be working with Bride Hall on plans for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket in Northwood, bringing additional offer and choice to the High Street. The new store will create up to 150 full and part time jobs for local people and allow us to provide a food shopping experience that can cater both for the weekly and basket shop.”
