DARING DAD: Father completes London Marathon to raise money for Anaphylaxis UK

Watford News recently spoke to Chris Soul, a father-of-two from Watford who completed the London Marathon on April 21.

Running the London Marathon was on Chris’ bucket list of things to complete before his 40th birthday. But the St John’s CofE Primary School teacher soon realised the scale of what he had signed up for and admitted he felt “a bit sick”.

Due to both his daughters dealing with severe allergies, Chris decided to raise money for Anaphylaxis UK. On the day of the marathon, Chris admits that he was “in tears” before even starting the race, but seeing the crowds and signs pushed him through.

He said: “It was amazing! The crowd really gives you that extra boost. There are lines of people cheering, people playing bagpipes and steel drums, orchestras – you feel like you’re in this surreal bubble.”

On completing the race, he said: “It was an absolute relief! The last few miles were so tough. I think my body went into shock; I rang my wife to come find me but I could barely speak!”

Thanks to all the donations, including a fundraising event at St John’s rooftop playground, Chris has raised more than £3,000 for the charity, smashing his initial target of £1,000.

To thank her dad for running the marathon for her, Chris’ youngest daughter celebrated by running around the house as part of her own “marathon”.

Chris said: “It feels absolutely brilliant! I’m so grateful to the people who donated; all nine of us running for Anaphylaxis UK have raised more than £30,000 collectively, and to be a part of that is incredible.

“And I couldn’t do this without my wife Rosie. She has been such an amazing supporter.”
