Notices have been placed around the Apsley Marina warning people not to handle any of the cygnets in the area, as this could be fatal for them.
As is common in most summers, a family of swans has taken up residence in the part of the Grand Union Canal that runs through the locks in Apsley, delighting residents and featuring in many an Instagram post.
However, new notices have been placed around the marina telling residents to stop handling the babies, as this could lead to deadly consequences.
It reads: “Urgent, do not touch the wildlife! Several baby swans have drowned because they have lost their natural oils. This is due to people handling them.
“Please do not touch any of the wildlife, it can be deadly. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and anyone found being a nuisance to the wildlife will be reported to the police. Also, do not feed them bread, it has been making them sick.”
The notice adds that bird food to feed the swans can be bought from the nearby Darcy’s bistro and Union Coffee & Dough café.
However, though several of the cygnets have disappeared from view, KINGSnews is happy to report that all of the young swans are fine. They are being taken care of until it is safe for them to return to the water.
If you see any swans which are injured or in danger, please contact the Swan Lifeline charity via their website.
