‘CURRENTLY SAFE’: Fallen tree prompts safety review of play areas in Abbots Langley village

Published on: 8th January 2026   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Following last month’s ABBOTSnews December edition, a large tree fell from Gade View Gardens Play Park onto Gallows Hill, prompting Abbots Langley Councillor Vicky Edwards and Councillor Ian Campbell to assist affected residents.

Questions were raised regarding the tree’s responsibility. Initial information indicated the land was owned by Sanctuary Housing, suggesting responsibility might lie with them.

Further checks, however, confirmed the tree was within the area maintained by Three Rivers District Council (TRDC).

According to Councillor Campbell and Councillor Edwards, the tree was not in the TRDC tree management programme due to an administrative oversight; therefore, it had not received routine inspections.

Councillor Edwards spoke to ABBOTSnews and said: “It is lucky that no one was injured or worse on this occasion, though the tree coming down was distressing for residents and wrote off a car.

I am pleased that the council has undertaken to check all trees in its play areas to ensure they are on the tree management programme and are currently safe.”

TRDC has been contacted for comment.
