CUP DISAPPOINTMENT: Wealdstone suffer surprise FA Cup exit against Hayes and Yeading

Published on: 25th October 2020   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Wealdstone F.C

Wealdstone suffered a shock FA Cup defeat yesterday afternoon at the hands of Hayes and Yeading, who play one league below the Stones in the National League South.

A goal in each half was enough to send the Stones out in their first cup game of the season, with the tie made incredibly difficult when Charlie Wakefield saw red just after the second half started.

Wealdstone announced the signing of goalkeeper Grant Smith just before kick-off and he was thrown straight into the starting eleven.

In what was a quiet opening 25 minutes, Francis Amartey eventually sprung the game into action when he broke in behind the Stones’ defence and finished past Smith to give Hayes and Yeading the lead.

The second half didn’t go to plan either, with Wakefield being sent off just four minutes after the restart.

The tie was seemingly put beyond Wealdstone’s reach on the 62nd minute when Omar Rowe found the top corner with a brilliant strike.

After the game, manager Dean Brennan, via the club’s YouTube channel, said: “We’ve got to give Hayes and Yeading a lot of credit, they’ve came with a game plan and they scored at some good times.

“We were miles away from the standards we have set recently, so all of that adds to the spice of the FA Cup, and it sees us out of it.”

Wealdstone are back in National League action on Tuesday night with a trip to Kings Lynn as they look to continue their decent league form.
