CRIMINAL DAMAGE: St Albans drunk who smashed McDonald’s window appears in court

A drunken dad-to-be who smashed in a window at McDonald’s in St Albans and injured a police officer was told by a judge today (September 29) that he has to tackle his drinking.

Leon Ryder, 23, caused over £5,500 of damage when he repeatedly kicked the door of the fast food restaurant.

Prosecutor Sarah Porter told St Albans crown court that it was near closing time on Sunday evening of October 3 last year when Ryder got into a row with his girlfriend inside McDonald’s.

She told the staff he had taken her mobile phone and had broken it. Ryder went outside and the staff locked the large door at the front. His girlfriend stayed inside and Ryder repeated kicked the door until it smashed.

Ms Porter said: “He was arrested and in an interview, he said he had little recollection. He said he woke up inside the police station not knowing how he got there.”

Six months later,  at just after 1pm on April 15th this year, a concerned member of the public called the police after hearing Ryder and his girlfriend rowing in Bricket Wood.

When the police arrived she said nothing had happened. Ryder was arrested for common assault and, as he was taken to the ground, he kicked out causing a scratch to an officer’s leg.

Ryder of Rowan Close, Bricket Wood appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to criminal damage and assault on an emergency worker. He had previous convictions for dangerous driving and possession of drugs.

He was not represented in court because of the barristers’ strike.

Judge Richard Foster sentenced him to an 18-month community order. He must attend 19 sessions of a thinking skills programme, an alcohol treatment programme, carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and £500 compensation.

The judge told him: “Your priority is to work on alcohol. In drink, you smashed down a door and kicked a police officer. You can’t do that.

“You must take responsibility for yourself. You are about to have a child. Being a parent is the most important role.”
