A woman from Radlett who was involved in a serious collision with a van earlier this year is calling for improved road safety on Watling Street.
Alison Reeves, known as Ali, had just opened the gate at the front of her house when a delivery van mounted the pavement and crashed into her.
She suffered from significant injuries, which included a grade four liver laceration, a grade three spleen laceration, three broken ribs, a broken pelvis, and fractures to her lower spine.
After spending six weeks in St Mary’s Hospital trauma ward, Ali is slowly getting back on her feet. She is continuing her long-term recovery, and is now more determined than ever to help prevent potential future incidents.
Ali is calling for Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) to install more traffic calming measures between the roundabout at Park Road and Watling Street.
This comes after she received a response from HCC earlier this year, which read: “Park Road and Watling Street have been assessed, along with other roads in Radlett, for potential inclusion in a 20mph zone, but is not amongst the higher priority locations and is not part of the current programme.”
Speaking to Radlettnews this month, Ali said: “Before my accident, there was already an increasing number of incidents at the junction.
“I’m a physically fit person, and had a child or elderly person been involved, I’m not sure they would have survived.”
Ali also received a response from Hertfordshire Police after submitting a Freedom of Information request regarding the number of crashes that have occurred on Park Road and Watling Street in the last five years.
The response stated that since January 1, 2020, there had only been three collisions recorded on their system at that location.
However, Ali claims to hear of one incident “every couple of weeks”, which has caused her major concern about road safety in Radlett.
HCC has been contacted for comment.
Police have been involved in the investigation of the driver, and allegedly, he is not being charged.
