COWBOY BUILDERS: Chorleywood resident issues warning after ‘nightmare’ encounter

Chorleywood residents are being warned to stay on high alert after an increase in untrustworthy tradespeople in the area.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke to ChorleywoodNews about their recent traumatic experience.

They first contacted the company as they were looking to have the moss cleared from their roof and were quoted a fee of under £1,000.

However, when company representatives examined the house, they claimed that the roof tiles were “rotten” and needed to be replaced.

A seemingly simple job descended into something else entirely as their “aggressive” salesmanship allegedly coerced the homeowner into agreeing to gratuitous works.

The resident said: “Suddenly, these people were trying to bankrupt us. They were pulling numbers out of nowhere every day, escalating the price, finding new things to charge for all the time. In the end, we felt we had no choice but to let them redo the whole roof.

“It’s been a nightmare; it’s so important people know about this. If you see red flags, get out and don’t be bullied.”

The resident managed to cut ties with the company but was locked into paying over the odds for works which they say were not asked for nor necessary.

Martin Bevon of House Martins Roofing, who have since stepped in to attempt to finish the repairs, believes there has been an increase in scammers since the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “They ripped off the tiles and just left them there. It’s terrible what these cowboys do. Since COVID-19, it’s definitely been getting worse. It appears there’s a new group going around, and people need to be really wary.”
