COMMUNITY CHAMPION: Hemel Hempstead resident receives ‘Covid Hero’ award

A Hemel Hempstead resident is the proud recipient of the gold award in the ‘Covid Hero’ category of the BBC Three Counties Radio Make A Difference Awards.

Personal trainer Dean Porter, who is also a former military, said he understands how important exercise is for people’s wellbeing.

He decided to move his classes online during lockdown and also offered free sessions to NHS workers.

His work and dedication to the community was much appreciated and his clients nominated him for the award – presented by Jonathan Vernon-Smith from BBC Three Counties Radio.

Dean said: “I had my own mental health issues in the past, I’m an ex-military and I have been diagnosed with PTSD a few years ago. My whole journey revolved around fitness, and I know how powerful exercise can be.

“I feel proud to receive the award, it just wasn’t expected. I do what I do every day, so I wasn’t expecting to receive any recognition for it.

“I didn’t realise how it was making other people feel and deal with the situation they were in at the moment, I was just taken back to be fair.”

Dean believes his classes gave people something to focus on, and they kept him busy too as he had to plan each session.

He added: “We all had to adapt; I never did an online class before. It was very different. I much prefer being outside, and I think the clients feel the same.

“I’d like to say a big thank you for nominating me, it wasn’t expected but it’s appreciated. I was proud to receive that award, not only for myself but also on behalf of everyone that worked with me.”
