CREATIVE CANVAS: Winning design chosen for Abbots Langley community centre art mural

Published on: 28th August 2025   |   By: Naomi Greenaway   |   Category: Uncategorized

A colourful mural will showcase everything that is great about Abbots Langley.

As reported in ABBOTSnews, a competition was held this summer to find a design for the mural on Abbots Langley Community Centre’s interior wall.

The winning design was submitted by 12-year-old Parmiter’s School student Methara. His entry reflects everything locals love most about Abbots Langley, including the famous bike on Follett Drive and St Lawrence’s Church at Christmas time. It even features the COVID-19 snake created by residents who painted colourful designs on pebbles and laid them in the local park during the 2020 lockdown.

Jasmine, nine, was named the runner-up as her entry featured a vibrant depiction of Abbots Langley using bright colours.

The competition was judged by acclaimed local artist Gaye Daniels, the chair of the community centre Eryl McNally, and two reporters from ABBOTSnews.

Methara joined Gaye on Friday, August 22, to help with painting the mural. Gaye then completed the painting over the next three days.

The winner was gifted a selection of art materials, while the runner-up was presented with a gift case of paints.

Gaye said: “I grew up surrounded by art and my grandmother was artistic. My sister, my children and grandchildren have adopted that creative side.

“I was delighted to paint the piece as it was a chance for me to be involved in history.

“The fact that people can look at this mural and it resonates with my work is quite positive.

“There’s some fantastic things in Abbots Langley, and people who are not from here can look at the mural and see it is quite the community.”
