Watford residents will be able to swap unwanted clothes for new-to-them items at a special event this month.
Veolia and Watford Borough Council are hosting the clothes swap at Watford Palace Theatre on Saturday, September 19, as part of Recycle Week.
Residents can drop off up to 10 unwanted adult-sized items between 10am and 10.45am before the clothes swap begins from 11am to 12pm.
Darren Harding, Regional Manager for Veolia Watford, said: “Watford’s residents are already incredible recyclers, and this clothes swap is the perfect opportunity to take that even further.”
He said: “By swapping and reusing clothes, we’re helping our community minimise waste whilst updating their wardrobes.”
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “National Recycle Week is a great opportunity to think differently about the items we no longer need and how they can be given a second life.”
He said the event would allow residents to refresh their wardrobes “in a sustainable, affordable way” while helping to reduce textile waste.
The event is being held during Recycle Week, which runs from Monday, September 14 to Sunday, September 20 and aims to encourage people to recycle more of the right things, more often.
According to 2025 research from the Waste and Resources Action Programme, 49 per cent of used textiles in the UK are placed in general waste bins, while the average person throws away 35 unwanted clothing items each year.
Organisers said clothes left after the event will be donated to Goods for Good, which will rehome them with people experiencing poverty, displacement or crisis.
Only clean and good-quality clothing can be donated, with accessories, nightwear, swimwear, underwear, children’s items, shoes and damaged clothing not accepted.
