CLOSED BOOK: Gerrards Cross bookshop welcomes start of new chapter as owners bid farewell

Published on: 30th January 2025   |   By: Ellie Rose   |   Category: Uncategorized

Once upon a time, there was an old independent bookshop in Gerrards Cross which was acquired by Sheryl and Martin.

With exciting events and a friendly team, it wasn’t long before the Gerrards Cross Bookshop became the beating heart of the community.

The pair also reached out beyond the confines of the walls, providing educational reading support to local schoolchildren.

As in all good stories, the shop faced many challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown and had to temporarily shut its doors.

Owner Sheryl said: “There was an outpouring of love and support during COVID; people were so supportive and wanted us to survive.”

In summer 2023, the bookshop had enough money to undergo a refurbishment, with children’s author David Walliams attending the official reopening.

Visitors to the bookshop over the years include Dame Mary Berry, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, and Matt Lucas.

Sadly for Sheryl and Martin, this adventure in Gerrards Cross is coming to an end as they have decided to “pass on the baton” to new owners.

While one chapter closes, another is set to begin as the team are looking for the next people to continue the shop’s legacy.

Speaking to CHALFONTS&GERRARDSCROSSnews, Sheryl shared: “There are mixed feelings. We want to leave behind a thriving community bookshop and the positive impact we had on literacy and children’s learning. We are going to miss the lovely customers.”

The pair will continue their work at Chorleywood Bookshop.
