CLEAN IT UP: Chorleywood student takes on Brazilian government with Olympic mess petition

Published on: 31st March 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Chorleywood student has launched a bid to get the Brazilian government to clean up the pollution and mess left behind after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Shreya Sharma has launched a petition on the campaigning website Change.org asking the authorities in the Southern American country to clean up the mess left behind after the event.

Countries having difficulty with the aftermath of major sporting events such as the Olympics is not uncommon. After the glitz of the sporting season, many stadia is left to rust away from disuse.

In fact, Beijing, which earlier this year hosted a Winter Olympics, is said to still be reeling from the financial impact of the Summer Olympics the city hosted in 2008.

Speaking to CHORLEYWOODnews, Shreya explained why she had started the petition in the first place: “When I started this petition, I had two things, a love for sport and environmental concern.
When I witnessed the magnitude of the environmental impact of the Olympics on Rio, a
country already riddled with poverty and crime.

“It was upsetting to see the abolishment of entire landmarks due to overflow of waste and landfill. For example, Guanabara Bay, a once stunning coastal scene has been overwhelmed with rubbish, which has affected not only the marine life but also tourism, resulting in a further financial deficit for the country.”
