CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Young singers add ‘extra magic’ to Stanmore society’s event

Frances Goldingay, chair of the committee at Stanmore Choral Society (SCS), said welcoming young people to sing in this year’s Carol Concert added “extra magic” to the event.

SCS hosted the concert on Saturday, December 14, featuring Four Old English Carols by Gustav Holst alongside many festive favourites.

Frances told STANMORE&EDGWAREnews: “The Christmas concert is very popular.

“We had a concert earlier in the year with young people [singing]. It’s opening the door to more young people being in music.”

The concert, which was at St Mary the Virgin Church in Harrow, was led by musical director and conductor Alexander Turner with James Mooney-Dutton on the piano.

It featured young performers from Kids Choir Harrow, who learn a wide variety of music styles taught by both ear and notation.

Speaking about the decision to include more “unusual” and “scarcely heard” tunes alongside traditional ones, Frances said it was a good challenge to be taking on different songs.

She said: “It’s always exciting to find new pieces of music. Our musical director inspires us.”

The concert has always been a popular event, and Frances said the concert often attracts an extra 30 to 40 people on top of their core audience.

SCS is also encouraging people to attend Monday rehearsals from 7.45pm to 9.45pm at St William of York Church and be part of the choir.

Frances added: “We’d love to have more people involved.”
