Chorleywood car-mad dad transforms vintage car into tiny caravan

Published on: 19th March 2019   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Chorleywood car enthusiast has featured on Channel 4 show, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, after revealing plans to transform his vintage Saab Estate into a fully functional mini caravan.

Mark, who passed his love for cars onto to his two daughters, plans to use his transformed Saab for the family trip to the Le Mans 24-hour race in France.

In the show, George Clarke goes to Chorleywood to meet Mark and his daughters to document and help him meet his extraordinary plans.

Mark explained how he saved the 62 Saab Estate from becoming a useless bit of metal which was going to be scrapped.

He said: “I needed some parts for my car and when I got there, I thought if they sell any more bits of this car, it’s going to be useless and whatever is left is going to the crusher and will be a baked bean tin in a supermarket somewhere. So I saved it.”

Marks plans meant the two metre vintage car was going to be turned into a place to sleep for his two daughters, which features a setae and a fully functioning kitchenette with a mini-fridge and a camping stove all under £1,000.

At the reveal, George said Mark’s pop up kitchenette has “master craftsmen all over it.”

He added: “It’s immaculate. It’s hard to imagine four months ago it was languishing in a barn on the way to the dump. This looks absolutely brilliant.

“It feels vintage and is a fantastic design. What a beautiful job.”

Mark revealed on the show that he was £285 over budget, but was chuffed with the outcome and is especially happy with his mini-fridge that will keep his beers cold.

He said: “When you’re camping, it’s essential, you don’t want gone off milk and you don’t want warm beer, that’s not allowed.

“We (him and his daughters) can spend proper quality time together. I am well chuffed with it.”
