UNLUCKY: Wealdstone stay top despite narrow defeat

Published on: 4th January 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Wealdstone F.C

Wealdstone fell to defeat at Marsh Lane as Oxford City nicked a 3-2 victory from the National League South leaders this afternoon (Saturday, January 4).

Goals from Joe Oastler, Elliot Benyon and Finn Tapp cancelled out second half goals from Jacob Mendy and Adam Coombes.

The game lacked any chances until the stroke of half-time, Oastler leaped at the back-post and met Zac McEachran’s cross to head in Oxford’s first goal.

It went from bad to worse for the Stones after the break, former Stone Benyon struck two minutes into the second half to double City’s lead.

A lifeline was handed to the Stones on the hour-mark as Mendy fired a half-volley in from Billy Clifford’s chipped through ball.

The Stones fought back and found an equaliser seven minutes later, Mendy’s cross found substitute Coombes at the near-post.

The game only looked like swaying towards the Stones until another McEachran corner was headed in by Tapp in the final 15 minutes.

The result still leaves Wealdstone top of the league, four points ahead of second placed Bath City with two games in hand.
