A team of young chess players displayed their prowess in the game when they faced off against Parliamentarians and staff in a recent tournament.
Ten representatives from Watford Chess Club, including three England junior internationals, played against older opponents from the UK Parliamentary Chess Club at Portcullis House in Westminster.
The event was planned by Roger Lancaster and Ewan Davids of Watford Chess Club, which dates back 130 years. It is especially famed for the success of its junior members, and Watford Juniors are currently the only club with a Centre of Excellence award from the English Chess Federation.
Matt Turmaine, MP for Watford, was a spectator at the event and even tried his hand at a game against fellow MP Warinder Juss.
Mr Turmaine MP said: “The speed of thought and the thinking ahead of the players was truly astounding. It’s clear the Watford team were no rookies and showed an abundance of skill and talent. It was a pleasure to meet and support them, and I congratulate them on their win.”
