A Ukrainian boy living in Gerrards Cross has used his passion for chess to raise funds for Ukrainian children displaced by the war.
Daniel Minenko and his family fled to Buckinghamshire from their native Kyiv in April 2022. Soon, Daniel’s mother, Tania, began working for the charity Community Impact Bucks.
Inspired by his mum’s charity work, Daniel decided that he also wanted to do something to help.
In July, Daniel spent all day playing chess with attendees at WhizzWhizzFest, a children’s literature and creativity festival inspired by Roald Dahl.
Through his chess playing, Daniel raised just under £600 to fund a trip to the Roald Dahl Museum for Ukrainian children living in Buckinghamshire.
Tania said of her son: “Being the compassionate young man he is, Daniel felt a strong urge to do something to bring a bit of joy into the lives of these brave young souls.”
Tania and Daniel are now liaising with the museum to organise the visit in November.
Tania said: “We really want the day to be a special one for these children and their parents.”
Since the festival, Daniel has also joined Gerrards Cross Chess Club.
