A debating team from a Northwood private school have excelled in contests hosted by some of the world’s top universities.
St Helen’s School Year 9 students Emily, Sumayah, Miriam, Sahana, Ashnee, Merissa, Shivi and Riya all participated in the International Competition for Young Debaters in February.
The following month, the team of Aishani, Esha, Sienna and Shanti qualified for the finals of the Oxford Schools’ debating competition. Just two weeks later, Aishani and Esha, now joined by two other students Jahnavi and Zaina, also qualified for the Cambridge debating competition.
Some of the students were then invited to the World Schools’ Debating Championship, hosted by Princeton University between April 19 and 21.
Representing St Helen’s were Aishani, Esha, Zaina, Shanti and Sienna, who won three of their six debates. The squad achieved sixth place out of 30 teams in the novices category.
The competition’s convenor, Azal Hussein, said: “They should be very proud of their performance given the size of the tournament and strength of the competitors.”
