As the nation celebrates King Charles III’s coronation, a performing arts group will be looking back to his namesake predecessor with a comedy production.
King Charles II was crowned at Westminster Abbey on April 23, 1661. In Rickmansworth Players’ upcoming production of the award-winning play Nell Gywnn, cast member and Rickmansworth resident Marcus Vassiliou is looking forward to portraying the King’s complicated personal life with feisty Queen Catherine and his many mistresses.
Written by contemporary playwright Jessica Swale and having won the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Nell Gwynn is described by the Players as a “cheeky comedy, brimming with laughs, music, and lots of double-entendre”. Set during a time when men traditionally dominated the theatre, the hilarious heroine Nell shows that women can successfully tread the boards.
Nell Gwynn is being staged at the Pump House Theatre, Watford from May 9 to 13. Tickets are available at www.nellgywnn2023.com
