A darts enthusiast is hoping to “introduce darts to the new generation” with his second youth darts tournament in Tring this month.
Alistair Ryan (pictured left) grew up in The Anchor pub in Tring, so it’s no surprise that he ended up playing darts from an early age. He took up the sport at five years old and went on to compete in county-wide and national darts tournaments throughout his childhood.
Since then, Alistair has used his love for the sport to involve the community in raising money for charity, as well as setting up an annual tournament in memory of his parents, which he has been running for the last 16 years.
Next month, Alistair will host his second youth darts tournament, in the hopes of getting more members of the younger generation involved in the sport. He explained that he’s noticed a rise in younger darts players, a trend he owes to the success of 18-year-old darts superstar Luke Littler.
Alistair has even managed to share his love of darts with his five-year-old son Oscar, who has become quite the player.
Speaking to TRINGnews, Alistair said: “It’s amazing! Because of Luke Littler, all the tournaments have gone crazy. The one in January that is dedicated to my parents began with 20 people, but this year we had around 125 people involved!
“Darts has been such a huge part of my life. With the youth tournament, it’s so lovely seeing youth players come through. I love introducing darts to a new generation.”
Alistair hopes to one day start his own youth darts academy, but for now he is focusing on the youth darts tournament. The event involves a round robin tournament for U10s and a straight knockout format for U16s and U21s.
The tournament takes place at Tring Con Club on Saturday, March 29. All ages are welcome. To take part, just turn up before 1pm to register.
