An international crokinole community is forming in St Albans, with people travelling from as far as Hungary to attend the championship finals in Chiswell Green on Saturday December 7.
Crokinole is a Canadian game that has grown in popularity worldwide in the last 10 years. It involves two players flicking discs into the centre of a circular wooden board.
St Albans is making a name as the UK base for the game, thanks to local crokinole fanatic Mike Ray.
This year, like last, the championship was held in the Greenwood Park Community Centre and brought together 60 game enthusiasts from all corners of the UK, as well as a pair from Hungary.
Mike told STALBANSnews: “It was a brilliant day. I was really pleased with how it went and, considering the bad weather, we had a great turnout.”
This year’s singles winner was Steve Burrows from Wales, while the Hungarian duo, Apri Lonstak and Nikolett Huszarik, scooped the doubles win.
Mike believes the competition will only continue to grow as the game is fast gaining in popularity across Europe.
You never know – in years to come St Albans might soon be considered the crokinole capital of the world!
