It was an opening day to forget for Watford FC fans as The Hornets lost 3-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, a team who were looking for revenge following last year’s 2-0 opening defeat in the same fixture.
Watford have been unbeaten on the opening day for the past 12 seasons, but a dominant away side ended that impressive statistic.
Abdoulaye Doucoure put the ball into his own net after he accidentally sent an attacking player’s pass beyond Ben Foster which put The Seagulls 1-0 just before the half-hour mark.
The second half saw Gerard Delofeu replaced by Roberto Pereyra in an attempt to get back into the game but Brighton’s Florin Andone extended the visitor’s lead after a powerful shot into the bottom right corner.
The new VAR system also saw action at Vicarage Road for the first time when a contentious tackle from Troy Deeney was questioned – fortunately for the striker, no action was taken against him.
It also came into play when Brighton’s debutee Neal Maupay may have been offside when he beat Ben Foster in a one-on-one, but the goal stood, making the scoreline 3-0.
Only Craig Dawson made it on the lineup out of Javi Gracia’s new signings today so fans are still eagerly waiting to see what the others bring to the table.
Next, The Golden Boys will hope to perform better against Everton next weekend.
