BREAKING NEWS: Blackmailing Watford paedophile jailed for more than 10 years

A Watford paedophile who blackmailed a 12-year-old girl in order to carry out a catalogue of sexual abuse offences has been jailed for 11 and a half years.

Mohammed Shamim Sahinur, 28, of Bucknells Close in the town, appeared at St Albans Crown Court for sentencing today (Friday, November 3).

He had been found guilty at an earlier trial of rape, sexual communication with a child, seven counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and four counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act.

Sahinur, who has significant developmental and learning disorders, and is potentially autistic, did not appear at his trial.

As a result of his mental health difficulties, Judge Caroline Wigin took the decision to present the facts of the case to Sahinur ahead of pronouncing sentence, rather than inviting the prosecution to make opening remarks.

She told him: “This is all about a little girl who was 12 years old at the start of your offending and 13 by its conclusion. You were much older than her and knew she was 12 right from the start.”

She revealed how the defendant connected with his victim on social media, and pressured her to provide explicit photos and videos, before threatening to send these to her loved ones should she not continue engaging with him.

He eventually persuaded her to meet up with him in Watford town centre, taking her to a public toilet block where he carried out various sex acts.

Judge Wigin said: “The result of all of this on her has been catastrophic.

“She feels totally scared and is in a constant state of anxiety. She doesn’t feel able to talk to anyone about this and it has had a really awful effect on this young girl.

“But this was not something you did on the spur of the moment – between September 30, 2021 and January 10, 2022 you called her 1,677 times and sent texts in their thousands.

“The pressure you put on this young girl was immense.”

The judge said that she took into account Sahinur’s mental difficulties in passing sentence, but considered he posed a high risk of causing serious harm to children.

“You targeted her, blackmailed her and took steps to prevent her reporting your contact because of her fear that you would send these images to other people,” she told him.

Judge Wigin said she would have imposed a sentence of 13 years imprisonment, but taking into account his mental health difficulties she reduced this to 11 and a half years in custody for the rape – with convictions for the other charges to run concurrently – plus an extended licence period of five years.

Sahinur also received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 16 and a half years, was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, and made subject to a restraining order preventing him from contacting his victim for the rest of his life.
