BOUNCE BAT: Amersham teen through to finals of BAFTA gaming awards

A teen from Amersham is in the running for a prestigious gaming award as part of this year’s BAFTA Young Game Designers (YGD) competition.

Ava Rogerson, 17, is one of 10 young aspiring game designers from across the country to be selected as a finalist for the Game Concept Award.  For the competition, she submitted her idea for Bounce Bat, a 2D platformer game featuring a flightless bat fighting to make his way home.

The winners will be announced on Thursday, June 22, and will then be featured in the Power Up experience at the Science Museum in London on July 27.

This is the second time Ava has been shortlisted after previously making it through to the finals last year with her game Escape.

Ava said: “I’m thrilled to be in the finalist group this year. I can’t wait to see everyone’s ideas and concepts and I’m looking forward to whatever is round the bend!

“I looked at what I did last year and what was successful and created a baseline structure to build off of. I chose something that was cute and would work well; I wanted to make something with a unique mechanic and went through a lot of different ideas.”

The winner of the Game Concept award will meet top gaming experts and work with them to bring their game to life.

Actor, comedian and YGD host Inel Tomlinson said: “I’m thrilled to be hosting the official BAFTA YGD ceremony again this year. There are so many fantastically imaginative concepts and designs among this year’s finalists, and I know the jury will have their work cut out selecting just four winners from this extremely impressive group.

“I can’t wait to be a part of the celebrations of their hard work, creativity and drive, and am so excited to see all the great things these talented youngsters go on to achieve. This is just the start of their journey!”
