BLOOMING LOVELY: Amersham goes for gold with entry for horticultural competition

Amersham residents are anxiously awaiting the verdict of a horticultural award after recently being judged.

On July 17, Amersham was judged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) for a Thames and Chilterns in Bloom Regional award. The visit included a two and a half hour walking and driving tour, admiring Sycamore Corner and the innovative platinum jubilee pollinator bed, complete with metal bees, Willow Wood, the new Kaleidoscope of Butterflies, the butterfly bed outside the Chilterns Lifestyle Centre, Pondwicks Nature Area and the perennially delightful Memorial Gardens.

The Children’s Art Trail showcased various installations, including willow, wooden and metal sculptures, painted murals, and the flagship horticultural displays. All of the features have been created in partnership with local artists and designers.

These include a tawny owl, installed in the new tiny forest opposite the Station in Chiltern Avenue, which was created in collaboration with Colin Pells, who live in Amersham on the Hill. Collin used a section of an oak tree which was felled, as part of it was diseased, from Hervines Park.

Before the tour commenced, Amersham Town Council highlighted the successes of their bloom efforts including their environmental projects and the work they undertake with children and young adults.

The award ceremony takes place in late September in Woodley, where the council hope to scoop up a gold award. Amersham did not enter the competition last year. Speaking to AMERSHAMnews, Town Clerk Steve Catanach said:

“Through innovative planting and the unique installations Amersham has never looked so great. The pockets of herbaceous planting, complemented by the plentiful areas of wildflowers add colour and interest.

“On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank the amazing Amersham in Bloom team for what has been a remarkable year. Amersham is sparkling like never before which is a testament to the effort and determination of the Town Council staff, Bloom Volunteers, and Andy Honour and the brilliant 1st Chesham Bois Scout Leaders.”
