BIRD RESCUE: Woman saves Grebe trapped in Rickmansworth Aquadrome

Published on: 18th February 2021   |   By: Lizzie Ellis   |   Category: Uncategorized

A brave woman jumped into freezing waters at the Aquadrome on February 14, to save the life of a trapped bird.

The swimmer, who does not wish to be identified, spotted the Grebe struggling and did not hesitate to swim to the middle of the lake, smashing her way through the ice to retrieve the Grebe.

30-40 passers-by gathered to watch the rescue and clapped when the bird was returned to the safety of the bank.

The Grebe was handed to Chris Wicks, owner of CW Wildlife Rescue, on Stockers Farm.

Chris told RickyNews: “We got a call to say there was a Great crested grebe stuck in the Aquadrome, and that a lady was going to swim to rescue it.

“We advised not to swim out as it was freezing cold and could be dangerous, but it turned out the lady was a wild water swimmer who had been training.

“She swam out quite a distance and took the bird in her left hand, she literally saved its life, she’s a real hero.”

The Grebe is now being cared for at CW Wildlife Rescue by Chris and his team. Chris said that the bird has damage to one of its legs, but is on the mend.
