BIG HELP OUT: Stanmore students shine in volunteering week

Published on: 14th July 2024   |   By: Lizzie Ellis   |   Category: Uncategorized

Students at Park High School in Stanmore took part in a charity challenge last month, supporting ‘The Big Help Out’, encouraging pupils to take part in volunteering opportunities and make a positive difference in the community.

The objective of The Big Help Out is to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their communities. Volunteering categories include community, animal welfare, health and social care, sports, sustainability and many more.

Park High School Headteacher, Colette O’Dwyer, said: “I am deeply proud of all our students and their commitment to this project. Living our values of compassion and teamwork with our students is just as important as academic achievement. This project has provided a perfect opportunity to reinforce these values and make a significant difference to our community”.

Pupils took part in a range of tasks from tidying classrooms, updating display boards, working with the premises team, supporting litter picks in the school and local environment and welcoming incoming Year 7 students, and writing birthday cards for residents at a local care home. Those involved in The Big Help Out were awarded with over 1000 volunteering points.

Reflecting on the week, Year 7 student Mahi, who also presented in an assembly, said: “Volunteering is important as it gives you a sense of achievement, helps you feel better about yourself, improving your confidence and self-esteem. It is also important that it helps us share our talents and learn new skills.  We can show commitment and also achieve better physical and mental health wellbeing”.
