Major fires broke out in several locations across Northwood and Ruislip last month, causing the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to issue a warning over the importance of smoke alarms.
The first incident took place on the evening of Wednesday, July 31, with 15 calls reporting a fire in a field off Kings College Road in Ruislip.
Crews from three different stations tackled the blaze, and though one hectare of grass was damaged, it was put out with no reported injuries.
The next incident occurred at around 10.20pm on Friday, August 9, at the Waitrose store in Kingsend, Ruislip. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters attended the scene.
There were fortunately no injuries, but half of a walkway on the side of the supermarket was damaged.
This particular incident is currently being investigated by both LFB and the Met Police as a possible arson.
Finally, at around 3pm on Thursday, August 22, the fire brigade were called to reports of a flat fire on Northwood High Street, prompting a response of four engines and 25 firefighters. Though part of a first-floor shop flat was damaged, there were no injuries. The fire is believed to have been started due to an accidental electrical fault.
In the aftermath of the incident, an LFB spokesperson said: “Smoke alarms were present at the property but were not working. This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home.”
