Explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) officials recently descended on Langleybury.
Emergency services could be spotted throughout the area near Langleybury Lane on the evening of Thursday, October 26, with a cordon being put in place and people being told to stay away from the area whilst operations were ongoing.
The alarm was raised when a member of the public found several objects of concern when clearing out an address in Abbots Langley.
According to Herts Police, these items were in fact several very old pyrotechnic film devices, which would have been used to produce fire and smoke effects for cinema and television productions.
However, these devices had been left in a shed, were now in a deteriorated state, and had aged way past their initial safety margins, making them possibly dangerous.
The decision was made to destroy the items in a controlled explosion. There was no damage to the property as part of the operation and the objects were destroyed completely safely. Police deemed there to be no further danger to the public, reopening the area and lifting the cordon shortly after the explosion.
