Plans for a new Lidl supermarket to be built on the current World of Water site in Hunton Bridge have been recommended for approval.
The proposal was deferred at a meeting of Three Rivers District Council’s (TRDC) Planning Committee on Thursday, November 16, but has received recommendation for approval.
If the application goes ahead, the budget shopping chain will be able to begin work on their new store, which will be located on Watford Road just off of the A41 main road.
The proposal hasn’t had an easy ride, with changes having been made to the initial plan after concerns were raised about access to the site.
Through the application process, there has also been a wide variety in opinions from members of the public regarding the development.
Some have supported the plan, with one resident commenting: “This is a great location for a supermarket with good roads, and it will not congest existing towns.
“There’ll also be extra choice for consumers – ideal in a cost-of-living crisis.
“The objections appear to be an element of Nimbyism in objecting with no real material planning concerns.”
Other have expressed their opposition, with one member of the public stating: “I question if the community needs a supermarket in this location. The local area is already well served by supermarkets.
A spokesperson for TRDC said: “The decision was deferred to allow time for officers to ask the applicant to review access arrangements to the proposed supermarket, to seek an independent review of highways/traffic safety issues and for a site visit by the committee to be arranged.
“The application is expected to return to a future Planning Committee.”
Lidl has declined to comment.
